Craftsman Chainsaw Review: Includes Gas, Electric, and Cordless Models

Power tools like chainsaws are challenging to buy because there are so many brands, types, and features to consider. I can understand why a lot of first-time buyers are frustrated with their purchase.

I also had the same experience some years ago. I didn’t know an excellent brand for power tools, and it took some trial and error for me to discover Craftsman.

If you’re searching for a chainsaw, you may want to check my Craftsman chainsaw review to make it easier for you to decide which one fits your needs.

Among the Craftsman chainsaws that I tried, the Craftsman CMCCS620M1 model is the most popular. It’s not surprising because it does its job in pruning, cutting, limbing, and trimming trees. It’s also helpful for DIY projects.

1. Craftsman V20 12-Inch Cordless Chainsaw (CMCCS620M1)

Craftsman is a well-known brand of high quality, yet affordable chainsaws. I like this V20 model because of its no-nonsense features that are suitable for average users and DIYers.

It performs well in many tasks, but it has a superior 4Ah battery pack for more sustained use in one charge. Moreover, I like its exceptional weight balance because, unlike the other models, the V20 has its battery near the rear, below the handle.

However, the V20 chainsaw is expensive, so it’s quite restrictive for some DIY enthusiasts.

Specs

  • Cordless
  • High-capacity battery pack
  • Auto oiling system
  • Bubble level
  • Compact design
  • Three-year warranty

Pros

  • Easy to start
  • Easy to maintain
  • Well-balanced weight
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • The top-handle design may be too difficult for people who use rear-handle chainsaws
  • May need to use a funnel to prevent oil from spilling
  • Expensive

If you’re into light firewood cutting, you may prefer the Craftsman V20 cordless chainsaw. It’s also ideal for your DIY projects because it’s very maneuverable due to its compact, top-handle design.

Moreover, it’s powerful 4Ah battery performs similarly to a 40V 2Ah battery chainsaw. It’s one of the safest cordless chainsaws available in the market.

2. Craftsman V60 16-inch Cordless Chainsaw (CMCCS660E1)

I like the powerful Craftsman V60 cordless chainsaw because it has many applications. I use it for minor construction, outdoor, and gardening activities. Moreover, I like its ergonomic design because I feel comfortable using it as it provides a cleaner cut.

The red color has substance and style, while the lithium-ion battery offers high cutting efficiency and extended runtime. Fortunately, I have other V60 tools that use the same battery pack, so I quickly have to switch them if I don’t want any disruption when I’m finishing a job.

Moreover, because the battery has an extended runtime, I don’t need to charge it frequently. The low kickback chain is an ideal size for many tasks, and the bubble level ensures precise cutting without the need for a separate leveler.

However, Craftsman doesn’t have any fast chargers, so it takes hours to charge the V60 chainsaw battery.

Specs

  • Brushless motor
  • High-performance battery pack
  • Bubble level
  • Tool-free maintenance
  • Auto oiling
  • Low kickback
  • Two cutting speeds
  • Molded handle with non-slip grip

Pros

  • Comfortable to use because of the molded handle and non-slip grip
  • Smooth operation
  • Long-lasting batteries
  • Easy to clean
  • Enhanced safety features

Cons

  • Expensive battery
  • No available fast chargers

If you need a chainsaw for your DIY projects and cutting firewood, you may want to try the Craftsman V60 16-inch cordless chainsaw. You may use it in your cleanup work after a light storm, and you won’t have any hard time cutting through a 16-inch hardwood log.

You’ll also like its other features like the oil level view window, tool-less chain tensioning, inertia chain brake, and throttle lock-off switch, among others.

3. Craftsman 16-inch, 12-Amp Electric Chainsaw (CMECS600)

I like this affordable Craftsman electric chainsaw because I was able to cut two cypress trees in my backyard. I cut the branches into firewood in a single day, and I find this tool impressive. I was skeptical at first, but I decided to try it because it’s from a reputable brand.

However, I needed to tighten the chain because it loosened up from use. Moreover, I had to use an extension cord when I used it to cut the trees because this model isn’t the cordless type.

Specs

  • 12 Amp motor
  • Low kickback 16-inch bar and chain
  • Auto oiling with a built-in view
  • Tool-free chain tensioning
  • Three-year limited warranty

  • Durable
  • Not as noisy as the other chainsaws
  • No exhaust fumes
  • Easy to start
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Uses a lot of oil
  • The chain needs tightening as it loosens with use
  • Needs extension cord if trimming or cutting trees far from a power outlet

If you’re searching for an affordable corded electric chainsaw that requires minimal maintenance, you may like this Craftsman 12-Amp, 16-inch model.

You can use it in clearing your yard after the storm or when you want to prune the trees on your property. It’s also helpful when you’re into DIY projects. It’s lightweight and relatively quiet compared to its gas-powered counterparts.

The Craftsman 42cc two-stroke engine chainsaw doesn’t emit much exhaust emission and uses less fuel compared to other models. Moreover, it features a low-kickback bar and chain for an easy slice through wood materials.

The engine is powerful enough to provide optimal performance. I like its durable and high-quality professional-grade chassis because it ensures that I can use the chainsaw for a long time.

I like its excellent handle design that features a three-point anti-vibration system that dampens noises while in use. It means that I don’t quickly develop fatigued arms while using the chainsaw for an extended time.

I also like its easy-start engine and bucking spikes for woodcutting stability. However, I find it a little heavy compared to other chainsaws.

Specs

  • Two-cycle full crank gas motor

Moreover, its automatic adjustable oiler helps in maintaining the bar and chain and makes them durable too. In terms of maintenance, I don’t need any additional tools to access the spark plug and filter. However, if there’s any complaint that I have, it’s its weight because it’s on the heavy side.

  • Three-point anti-vibration system
  • Low kickback chain and bar
  • Inertia-activated chain brake for better control
  • Automatic oiler for quality upkeep
  • Tool-free access to the spark plug and filter

About the Brand

Sears registered the Craftsman trademark on May 20, 1927, and its early customers were primarily farmers. As the USA shifted to the automobile age, it upgraded the quality tools and included chrome plating.

The brand belonged to the middle tier tool line, and Sears marketed it as being comparable to other well-known brands. After some time, many stores also sold Craftsman devices.

In March 2017, Stanley Black & Decker acquired the brand, but it allowed Sears to manufacture and sell tools under the Craftsman brand for 15 years.

In October 2017, Stanley Black & Decker signed a deal with Lowe’s for the latter to sell the Craftsman tools at its stores. It was the first time after 90 years that the rival stores would sell the iconic brand, and Sears would receive a percentage of the sales for the next 15 years.

Lowe’s stores began selling the Craftsman products in late 2018. There was a delay in bringing them to Lowe’s branches because Stanley Black & Decker shifted the production back to US facilities.

Craftsman is a robust brand, and the decision to bring the production closer to US markets is cost-effective.

Many hand tools had an unlimited lifetime warranty, which Sears instituted when it offered the brand in 1927. It didn’t require any proof of purchase or receipt, and the owner quickly brought the defective Craftsman product to a local retail store for repair or replacement.

However, Sears changed the warranty program on many tools to 25 years. It also required a receipt, and the lifetime warranty excluded precision hand tools.

Today, Stanley Black & Decker still honor the warranties, but newer packaging indicates a limit on warranty claims.

Final Thoughts

Craftsman is a reliable brand of tools that have been around since 1927. Stanley Black & Decker acquired it from Sears in 2017, and its products are now available in other stores, including Amazon.

If you’re searching for an efficient and sturdy chainsaw, you may want to try its 42cc 2-Cycle 16-Inch Gas Powered model because it works well for your tree pruning, delimbing, cutting, and trimming tasks.

If you want convenience and comfort, you’ll find it in this tool with a three-point anti-vibration system and cushioned handle. You can also use it for your DIY projects because it will always get the job done.
